Gaining a Deeper Understanding of the Problem
Discussion Part One:
The key issues Ashley Wall discusses with John, according to Skinner and Beckman (2008)
is Jim Collin's theory of moving from good to great. There is immense job satisfaction and high
high turnover among the line foremen at Treadway. The line foremen are in a conflict
relationship between union and management. The foremen were giving limited
opportunity for career advancement, and faced with the demands of Treadway to look the
reasons for low productivity. Solving these problems required rethinking the philosophy
that guides workforce management and changing the Treadway culture. In the Treadway
Tire video clip, Ashley discussed with her John, who is retired as a head executive, issues

that she must take steps to solve at Treadway.
Key Issues
In the Treaway case, the issues mentioned were the insufficient training and the turnover it caused in foremen positions. The majority of the new foreman were linemen within the
Company. When the linemen accepted the job they did so without the proper training.
According to Robert Henry, personnel manager, a lot of foremen were put on a line
before they have enough knowledge of the job description. The general supervisors
expect them to "sink or swim". (Henry, 2007).
Another mistake involving the company was the reduction of training in an effort to cut costs.
Ultimately, this was going to increase the cost to the company through the high turnover rate
and inefficiency. The high turnover caused numerous other workers to taken on extra shifts.
the other increase came from hiring employees outside the company to replace the ones that
resigned. By investing more time in training the foremen will let the employees know that
the company cares about its working force and that this could lead to other managerial
positions in the company.

Recommendations
Ashley is the Human Resources Director at Treadway and began reviewing the mission
statement and vision. It seems all institutions have these statements
but is Treadway living up to theirs if they have one. This was never stated in the information
article Treadway "Tire Company-Job Dissatisfaction and High Turnover-Lima Plant. "
Ashley felt that bringing the foreman together to work on effort and rework what they have

At this point in the discussion, Ashley seems to be headed in the right direction as she is
