Religion Mr. Groch
St. Augustine of Hippo
Born to a Pagan father and Christian mother, St. Augustine of Hippo made a major impact on the church during his lifetime and his stories are still told today. He was born in the year 354 and became a famous philosopher and theologian. His works in these fields helped to shape the development of Western Christianity. As a teenager, Augustine followed several different religions including Manichean and also pursued a hedonistic lifestyle at times. Augustine converted to Christianity in 386 and devoted himself to the Church. He decided to become a priest where he practiced celibacy and learned to preach the Word of God. His works in the clergy helped him to become as he is known today as the patron saint of regular clergy.
The works and wonder of St. Augustine have really inspired me to become a better Catholic and more importantly a better person. I find it very interesting that he was such a talented theologian and thinker. The qualities possessed by Augustine are now the backbone of the Augustinian order of priests. I am very familiar with this order of priests because of their influence on many schools in the surrounding area. Villanova, Bonner, Malvern and St. Augustine are all run by these priests, and because of this I know that these schools teach great morals and would be a great place to receive an education.
