Events that led to the Spanish war of 1898.
The state war between the Americans and Spain was declared by the United States in the year 1898. This was in addition to the teller amendment which stated that the U.S was not planning to accommodate Cuba. Many of the Americans men came out to help in the war. The U.S army was not well prepared to participate in the war. However the navy was well prepared and they did well. They ended up being victorious over the Spanish men.
This war occurred due to a an event that happened at the Havana harbor. This was due to the death of more than two hundred and fifty American sailors due an explosion at the harbor. Investigations on this incident were carried out and the results proved that it was due to an explosion in one of the rooms in the ship where steam boilers were kept. It is for this reason that the Spanish were upset because it was believed that it was all their fault. The war was due to the U.S support of Cuba's decision to declare its independence. Americans were also supported by others because of their decision to support Cuba.

The war was well fought by the navy who well prepared. Americans also received support from the yellow pages. The war is termed to be small but the effects have been long term. President McKinley's request to have the war declared was approved by the congress. Although the Spain was working on a negotiation of withdrawal from Cuba, the explosion made the situation worse. The navy fought well though they got attacked but diseases causing most of them to die. They received a backup fro the 'rough riders' who helped in their defeat of the Spanish. In less than four months more than four hundred American soldiers were killed. The African American soldiers were a major contribution to this victory. The war ended in 1898 through the treaty of parish which declared independent to Cuba. The Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippine islands were handed over to the United States, after paying Spain an amount of twenty million dollars. The united states were still in to the civil war before 1865. There were some issues in Mexico but the unite states did not get involved. The European countries were greatly involved. The war between American and the Spain made the Americans victorious and this made the united states to be named as a colonial power.
