Ethics Paper
In comparing the similarities and differences between virtue theory, utilitarian, and deontology I found out that they all deal with how a person judges morality and ethics. But each of them are differ in certain ways. For instance deontology is when a person strives for excellence while performing their duties. Utilitarian is when a person will make a decision based on what is best for the people. Lastly virtue theory is doing what is right no matter what the outcome is. A personal experience for myself would fall under deontology. While I was in the Military, US Navy to be exact, I did not want to fall under the typical sailor. I was the only female welder in my division and I wanted to prove to my coworkers that I was just as good as them if not better. So I practiced and practiced, I took every weld job so I could become better. I got every single qualification I could and then some. At the end of my tour I was the best welder in my shop and although I was the lowest ranking I had the highest qualifications. I was also the only third class female with a Gas Free Engineer Certification. Meaning after a fire has been put out I was the one to back in and test the air to make sure it was safe for personnel. With that being said I was awarded the Navy and Marine Achievement medal. Utilitarian and virtue theory also played a role while I was in the military. Once I became a supervisor I had to make choices that were best for my people. I could not just let them suffer. But I also had to make decisions that were right even if that meant someone had to get into trouble. So in life I do not believe that one person only uses one of these theories. In some way or form people use all three at one point in their life.
