Escorts versus Prostitutes
Prostitution is the business or practice of providing sexual services to another person in return for payment. The person who receives payment for sexual services is called a prostitute or sex worker. The world of prostitutes also includes escorts. Escorts, also known as call girls; they are sex workers but are not visible to the general public. Therefore, they do not normally have to handle psychopath clients like street prostitutes. Prostitutes who work outdoors in particular often confront clients that use physical and sexual violence on them. Escorts differ from street prostitutes in terms of the application of the concept of supply and demand, costs and value-added service provided.
The application of the concept of supply and demand on escorts defer from prostitutes in terms of services provided. For escorts, they supply services mentally and physically towards their clients. In "Superfreakonomics" by Levitt and Dubner, a young divorcée, Allie, sees good in everyone. As an escort, she does not trade sex for money only but an opportunity to exchange a "different version" of their everyday life, a companionship.
On the flip side of the coin, prostitutes provide sexual interactions only. Once the client erects, the deal is done and the prostitute gets paid depending on which sexual trick is performed. Men will always be interested in sex and some are likely to be more interested in paying for it. AskMen states, "Aside from the obvious safety and cleanliness issues, Internet sites provide johns with a greater choice, an opportunity to preview particular escorts and a modicum of confidentiality." Thus, the demand for escorts increases because the clients themselves care for their safety than wealth. As such, demand for escorts overtakes the demand for street prostitutes significantly for the past decades.
From the aspect of costs, an escort charges more than a street prostitute. Allie says, "When she started out in Chicago, at $300 an hour, the demand was nearly overwhelming." Not long after the increase in fees by 67%, there was practically no "decrease in demand." Although escorts cost more, it still meets strong demands from the clients. "The average prostitute is involved in about 300 unprotected sex acts each year, and rates of sexually transmitted disease like HIV are high among sex workers."
As safety and cleanliness was discussed previously, clients have demand for protected sexual intercourse and would rather pay more for what is worth. Prostitutes are more exposed to unprotected sexual intercourse because they charger cheaper than escorts. Prices are lowered because there is a lower demand in males of attending to street prostitutes. Hence, they earn lesser and even provide discounts just to earn some money.
