The Happiest Refugee is a memoir of Anh Do's extraordinary true story of a journey from Vietnam to Australia. Anh refers to himself as the happiest refugee in Australia. Anh has an optimistic attitude; he is easily delighted, appreciative and confident. His personality and strong family history contribute to his happiness. In this essay I will discuss the aspects of Australian life which helped him live a happy life. There are a number of factors which contribute to Anh's satisfaction with Australia including generosity of some Australians, opportunities to accomplish and his supportive family. The Happiest Refugee tells the incredible and inspiring life story of why Anh is pleased with his life in Australia.
One of the factors which contributed to Anh's satisfaction includes the generosity of the Australian people that he met. The first thing that happened was two smiley nuns from St Vincent de Paul came and gave his family a huge garbage bag stuffed full of clothes for free. His family was in heaven. Moreover, Anh's family's first neighbour was a kind old lady, Miss Buk. She was not hostile, on the contrary, she was instrumental in helping them find their feet in the new exciting country. Miss Buk would assist them in filling a handful of forms which emits Anh's primary school application, his Dad's work forms and his Mum's hospital documents when she was pregnant with Anh's little sister. After his sister was born, Miss Buk gave his mum a tiny white dress made of lace for the christening which was the most beautiful thing his mum had ever seen. His mum and dad would then turned to each other and say "What a great country!".
Another factor is the freedom of religion together with the capitalist society that adds to Anh's satisfaction as an Australian. Australia is a country filled with freedom. Anh's family is relieved to arrive in a country where religion is not strict, as an aftermath of Vietnam War where the Communist regime required them to have no religion. Anh's strong Catholic believer family were against the communist and left Vietnam. When he moved to Australia, religion has given another dimension to his life and he went to one of the best catholic school. Likewise, he got married at a very young age and catholic has a lot of respect to marriage and to family, especially for mothers and women. He was blessed to land in this beautiful country and was given a chance to live in freedom and live as a Catholic.
