Design of Survivable Networks

For the scenario given below, the goal of this assignment is to develop a transmission network that provides the survivability. Note that there are a number of ways to achieve this goal. You will work in a group of two, and the report is due November 6 (in class).

Scenario Description

 There are ten buildings where the traffic originate and terminate.

 Of the ten buildings, Buildings A, B, C, and D, are close in distance and are located in the same campus. Similarly, Buildings E, F, and G, are close in distance and in another campus. The two campuses are not too closely located. The other buildings, Buildings H, I, and J are scattered at random locations, not too close to either of the two campuses and are not close among them.

 Among the buildings in the same campus, there are high levels of traffic to be transmitted between any building pair. (Don't forget the transmissions are bi-directional.) Between any other pair from the ten buildings, the levels of traffic are significantly lower. You may assume that a low level of traffic means less than OC-3 and a high level of traffic means OC-48 or higher.

We want to design a transmission network such that

 All buildings are connected with sufficient capacity.

 The designer should be cost conscious. (See below for the cost assumptions.)

 Between any pair of buildings with a high traffic level, there should be two disjoint paths. Disjoint path s are paths that do not share any equipment and links except the two end points.

 For any other pair of buildings, there should be no single point of failure, i.e., the network can sustain a single failure in the equipment or links connecting between them.

You should note that even for a simple scenario like what is described above, there are numerous possible solutions. I expect you will use the SONET in your solution, but you can dazzle me with brilliant ideas of your own. If you use the SONET, you may assume the following:

 The available connection speeds are OC-3, OC-12, OC-48, and OC-192.

 The cost of one unit of OC-N is

 Two types of equipment can be used: Add-Drop Multiplexes (ADMs) and Digital Cross-Connect Systems (DCSs). Assume that each ADM costs 100 and each DCS cost 1,000.

Obviously, the above statements do not describe the situation completely. You may make any additional assumptions that are reasonable and in your view may reflect the real life situations.
