A brief history of databases
Databases have been in use since the earliest days of computers. By the mid 1960's there were a number of data base systems in commercial use. In 1968 IBM had their own database management system known as IMS (information management system). IMS was developed software written for the Apollo Program for NASA.
In 1970 the University of Michigan developed the Micro Information Management System (Easthope). Micro was used to manage large amount of data sets. The system remained in production until 1998. In the 1980's programmers began to treat data as objects. That would be a personal attibutes such as a person name, phone number, age, etc.
In the 21st century the new trend of NOSQL databases was started. Most of them can be used as either key value stores or document orientated databases.
In conclusion data bases have come a long way over the years, to combine information to make it easier to obtain information.
Various database types
There are several different types of databases. You could use a data base for personal use as well as business.
Centralized databases:
Shared database stores their information on a central computer knows as a mainframe. Individual database is used to store personal information, such as household budget and/or your personal household inventory.
Client/Server database
Databases reside in a server that clients can access through their computer, which are linked by LAN or WAN.
Distributed databases:
Flat file database the data must be entered many times and often has many empty files. This data organization is often a waste of computer resources.
Hierarchical database:
Organizes data in a tree like structure. Its elements connect in a one to much relationship.
Relational model is the most commonly used type of database. The information in more than one file can easily be extracted.
Object orientated databases can handle many new types of data, such as graphics, photos, audio and video. Object-oriented database use small reusable chunks of software called objects
In conclusion databases are used to store our information, and to have easy access to it.
