Competencies and Career Interests
Competency is an individual's displayed behavior demonstrating his or her ability to perform required job function. Understanding what our personal competencies are helps to guide us in the right career choice. By understanding our personal competencies we can be better employees, managers, and communicators. Having a clear understanding of our competencies helps us to figure out what we are looking for in a career, what we want to do and where we want to go.
My personal competencies indicated that my strengths were: following instructions, organizing, and delivering results. These three strengths would make me a better manager and communicator because I have the ability to follow directions, organize, and deliver results within my organization. Most organizations look for managers who posses skills that align with their values and goals.
A great communicator and manager is someone who can change their communication techniques based on a particular audience, need, or situation. In my organization I deal with three different states, accounting personnel and engineers. Each one of these situations determines how I need to communicate. When I deal with accounting I need to speak in financial terms. When I communicate with the engineers I need to be very clear and become the liaison for accounting. Each state I support has its' own regulatory requirements which also determine how I approach a given situation. Communication is a constant change in my career.
The competency that I should specifically focus on to adapt my communication techniques would be coping with pressure. Although, I can be very personable and likeable, sometimes under pressure I tend to be more blunt and straightforward. I need to focus on being able to handle different high pressure situations in the same manner I handle non-pressure situations. By being able to handle the pressure better I would be able to communicate in the same way I would without pressure. I have the ability to build relationships with people and present a professional level of integrity when speaking with others. By not working on this competency I could jeopardize the respect that I have worked so hard to earn.
