My interest is drawn to a career in Criminal Justice after observing all the fatal tragedies caused by suicide bombers, drugs in society and most memorable, the events of 9/11. All my life, I have been a Business student working in the financial sectors of established companies. All that is about to change after discovering Monroe College created an online program MS in Criminal Justice. Being a full time civil servant working at a government agency and a single mom with two kids, I find the online program works in my best interest when it comes to family time and work. But now more than ever, I am eager to learn how the American criminal justice system works, how to control, deter, punish crime, uphold the law and apply the constitution.
I have worked previously in the federal agency known as the US Department of Homeland Security in the immigration department as a federal contractor. Unfortunately, I was laid off. Presently I work as an Eligibility Specialist for NYC Human Resources Administration applying government regulations and procedures in making determinations for public medical insurance. But what I learnt at the federal agency always held my interest, and I made a commitment to further my knowledge in immigration law. An opportunity presented itself to me to be an Immigration Services Officer so I firmly believe this degree will prepare me to be informed and be an effective leader in my position.
My goals is to complete the MS in Criminal Justice degree and be an Immigration Services Officer working with my team mates to make proper and fair decisions in an ethical manner. This degree will lay down a foundation and open doors to a new career path as I advance in my daily life. I believe also it puts me in an excellent pathway to gain successful employment and have a passion to do what I love.
I expect to learn in this program the techniques, procedures and responsibilities associated with Criminal Justice. I hope to gain as much knowledge as possible to analyze and examine situations presented before me and use the law to make determinations based on the evidence/materials/documents given to me. Most importantly I expect to gain experience and understand the legal system and what it takes to make a difference in the world, community and peoples' lives.
This is definitely a stepping stone for me and I am eager to start and learn all about the law and justice from my professors. I hope to complete the program in 2 years and be successfully employed with the US Department of Homeland Security. To compliment my degree, I will be taking Law courses at CUNY School of Professional Studies as well to enhance and be verse with immigration terminology. I want to be an all round student and by learning and applying my knowledge and experience, it will lead me to be better developed and able to handle a career in any field in Criminal Justice.
