'Change is the only constant'-Heraclitus
One thing you can be sure will stay the same, is the inevitability of change. Everything will change at some point, in one way or another. Heraclitus once said that he walked across the same river every day. Yet the water in it was different every time, so was it the same river? This applies equally to cars, boats, and even the human body. Every 7-10 years, every cell in your body will have been replaced, every part of you has changed, yet still, you are the same person.
Without change, the world cannot advance, in fact without change, nothing would ever have happened. Nothing would even exist. The big bang was caused by, and is a form of, change. Even those who believe the world was created in other ways (creationism) cannot deny that it was change that brought about the beginning of the universe. In fact, the beginning of the universe itself, is a form of change.
The world relies on progression, and without change there would be no progression. Everything changes at one point, except for one thing, the certainty of change. The rate of change, however, is rapidly increasing. Using the example of the horse and carriage depicted next to an aeroplane, just as our progression allows us to accelerate faster (a plane having much better acceleration than a horse), it accelerates itself. The invention of the horse and carriage was not made until the fifteenth century, very quickly followed up by the aeroplane in 1903. This is a good example of the rapid acceleration of change as it shows two means of transport, one much more technologically superior, and how the length of time taken to develop them greatly decreased.
People resist change, yet without it there would be no progress. This statement written underneath a snapshot of a horse and carriage and aeroplane in the stimulus booklet tells us that change is the cause of progress and without it, we would never advance. This is sort of what is happening in Pleasantville before David and Jennifer become Bud and Mary Sue. There is no change occurring, meaning no progression is occurring. This is why, after David (Bud) and Jennifer(Mary Sue), cause changes to occur, different advances and progression are made, including the invention of colour T.V.'s.
Prior to this, Pleasantville is a town that exists without change, however, Pleasantville cannot have existed without previous change, would not be able to advance without more change. Pleasantville is a myth, a snapshot in time (just like the literal snapshot of the horse and plane). No technological advances are made. No children are born , yet people exist, meaning at some stage they will have had to have been born. This is why, in Pleasantville, although being the whole point of the show, change is unavoidable.
The world changes dramatically every day, yet the biggest changes occur over time. For example, in 'The Quantum
