Buffalo Airways
Buffalo Airways has been operating in Northern Canada since 1970. Quite large for a privately owned airline and definitely not your typical outfit, Buffalo is a mishmash of antiquated aircraft of all types operating a scheduled passenger service, charter and contract flights for passengers and cargo, as well as a freight division with uses a combination of trucking/air freight to move goods to remote locations all over the north. Buffalo also fulfills firefighting contracts using the Canadair CL-215 and can perform aerial application requirements with its Douglas DC-4.
Also integral to the company is its large Transport Canada certified AMO (Air Maintenance Organization) division required to service the company's aging aircraft. The AMO is a large part of the "Buffalo School of Aviation" which offers an aircraft maintenance engineer course as well as other programs including flight attendant training. The main storage and maintenance facility is located at the Red Deer (Alberta) Regional Airport (CYQF). Buffalo's main base is at Yellowknife Airport (CYZF) with a secondary base at Hay River/Merlyn Carter Airport (CYHY) in northern Alberta.
Buffalo Airways is most famous for the reality TV documentary series on History Television that follows the day-to-day workings of the airline. Premiering on 18 November 2009, "Ice Pilots" is now in fourth season and proving to be a lucrative addition to the business. The company sells products including t-shirts, hoodies, and hats from its new website called BufffaloAirWear.com.
