BMW, is without a doubt one of the world’s most notable and easily identifiable car brands. It has achieved unparalleled success, rooted in its headquarters located in Munich, Germany. However, if the company were to seek to expand, Munich would not be an ideal location, as it lacks diverse infrastructure required for large-scale car manufacturing, and faces a remarkably high population density. Instead, a company like BMW should consider seeking treasure in the land of opportunity that is the great white north, Canada – particularly, in Cambridge, Ontario. Cambridge, alongside Waterloo and Kitchener, makes up the Tri-Cities of Ontario, the fourth largest metropolitan area in Ontario. Let me shine light on all that Cambridge, the Tri-Cities and even Canada as a whole has to offer. The Tri-Cities are home to a large manufacturing base and rapidly growing technology sector, which allows these cities to serve as a beacon for investors’ capital resources. It is no coincidence that major companies such as Toyota, Manulife and Google have referred to the Tri-Cities as the new “Silicon Valley”. Canada’s involvement in a wide range of trade agreements, including NAFTA, EFTA, CETA, and the TPP provide a strategic gateway to dynamic automotive markets around the world, such as Asia and Europe.
It is also important to be mindful of the financial stability and benefits that arise via manufacturing in Cambridge. The tri-cities are well-known for having home/rent prices significantly lower than the neighbouring cities as well as notably low-interest rates, which can in turn leave more disposable income in the hands of consumers to be spent towards automobile purchases. For six consecutive years, the World Economic Forum has declared Canada's banking system to be the soundest in the world. Additionally, Canada offers the lowest marginal effective tax rate and R&D intensive sector business costs in the G7, with a 17% and 15.8% advantage over the US respectively.
Yet another source of advantage offered by Cambridge, in Ontario, Canada is the highly refined and diverse infrastructure that can be found in this location. For example, there is already a freight train that services a Toyota factory in the city – a perfect example of the type of transport available to/from the city to aid in smooth delivery of materials. Various other transport features such as Highways 8 and 24, and the Mill Creek Bridge, allow for resources to move in, across, and out of the city with relative ease.
On the topic of resources, note that Canadian workers in the auto industry are recognized for low turnover and are highly educated and reliable due to top quality education institutions that produce qualified graduates in engineering, machining, etc. This point is highly salient for the city of Cambridge, as there are multiple well-regarded universities and colleges near the Tri-Cities, including the universities of Waterloo, Laurier, and
