Skills and Attitude are basic aspects of human life. Skills can be learned and attitudes of people can be recognized. For students preparing to enter the workforce, it is important that they have developed the all-important skills necessary for the job search and employment process in this competitive and often complex world.
The book is a must for any student preparing to enter the corporate world. Students must answer the questionnaire provided in the first part of the book. This will enable them to obtain a position and secure a career preference.
Becoming an Exceptional Employee by Brent S. Mayes (Griffin Technical College) will help students develop these skills by taking them on a step by step journey through goal setting, dealing with stress, the job application process, and the elements of how to become an exceptional employee. Included in this book are practical tips, real-world examples, visual representations and much more.
Management Insights
The book gives an insight into Goal setting for real people with guidance on salary preferences vs salary requirements (Salary a want or a requirement). Causes of stress and stress management tips includes avoiding all stress and manage the rest of the stress .Tips for discovering behavior problems and addressing them have been provided. Problem solving and Decision making chapter tells us the pros n cons of immediate decisions and well planned decisions. The advantages and disadvantages of such decisions are also discussed.
Communication Insights
The author covers the communication aspects of a student, to be tested in preparation of employment documents and interview.
Resume writing needs to be purposeful and be aimed at the primary client i.e. the employer. This should be written accurately, briefly and clearly. Cover letter needs to be written exactly in the form of a business letter resorting to 7C's (Complete, Concise, Concrete, Courteous, Considerate, Correct and Clear). Similar format needs to be adhered to while writing the Thank you/Follow-up letter.
Interview has the highest weight age in job seeking arena. A good communicator will always have a winning interview. Special attention to oral communication is needed in an interview. During question answer session, interviewer's perception of the subject needs to be understood. Answers need to be matched with the interviewer's perception so as to change his/her perception. Dressing is also a subset of communication wherein attitude and frame of mind is displayed. Need to follow the corporate dress code.
