Change is a process of transition from one physical or mental state to another. Its consequences differ depending on the cause and situation. Friendship and family are often catalysts for diversification as it is human nature to want the power to love who you want. 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' (ATSS), a novel by Khaled Hosseini and 'Flight', a short story by Doris Lessing, explore the circumstances that influence individuals to change.
Friendship is a type of belonging gained through loyalty and respect; it can consume the mind of an individual and cause them to transpose themselves in search of acceptance. Through 'Flight', Doris Lessing reveals the properties of friendship and their influences. At the beginning of the narrative she uses repetition and alliteration, "'Pretty, pretty, pretty,' he said, feeling the cold coral claws tighten around his finger," to reinforce the affection a person feels around friends and to highlight the underlying tension that arouses when one becomes attached to someone/something. Friendship has the power to lull one into a false sense of security and cause people to mature mentally. Later on, Lessing employs a simile, "tumbling like puppies on the grass," to compare young adults to childish animals, juxtaposing the present situation to the past, highlighting the transformation that has occurred due to friendship. In the book 'ATSS', Khaled Hosseini explores the development of relationships and how they affect individuals. Near the start, Hosseini uses a metaphor, "Like an art lover running out of a burning museum, she would grab whatever she could," to prove the importance of remembering the moment where a friendship changes to be a partnership or relationship. Nearing the end, Hosseini utilises premonition, "He's going to kill her...He really means to," to indicate the catalyst for a transition where an external circumstance puts a friendship at risk. Overall, friendship encourages loyalty in a person and causes them to develop internally.
Familial change infiltrates every aspect of a person's life as they mature. 'Flight' explores the opinions of different generations on family values. Repetition of 'his' in "...his granddaughter, his darling," reveals the ownership a grandfather feels over his granddaughter, reinforcing the familial bond. This bond causes individuals to transform due to circumstances within family. Lessing uses reminiscence, "When I got married you made me feel like it was something wrong," to remember previous experiences that caused tension in the family. This verifies familial change continues to affect individuals. In 'ATSS', Hosseini employs tone to stress a feeling of anger and grief when the main male character discovers his wife is not pregnant,
