My Decision to go to College

During high school the thought of college was far from my mind. My only goal was to join the U.S. Army. During my sophomore year that changed when I became involved with the local emergency management agency. This was a volunteer organization that assisted the local police and fire department during emergency incidents. By my senior year I was completely involved with the organization and turned my attention to the local fire department. After graduation I was hired by my local fire department as a firefighter and I was constantly attending the specialized training to become a firefighter and a paramedic.

When I first joined the fire department my goal of entering the military was forgotten. Five years into my career I began to look at what I needed to do to enhance it. Most of the firefighters and officers I worked with had some or no college education. I still did not think it was necessary for a firefighter to have a college degree. Out of the blue I decided to join the army reserves.

After coming back from training I started thinking that I might need something more than just a high school education. The military gave me a new sense of direction so; I started taking classes at the local junior college for a fire science degree. I never completed the degree because four years later I found my new and current job with a private security company. This job was a quick eye opener, the more education you have the more opportunities lie ahead. I was part of a select few that was hired based on my background with no college degree.

If I ever planned to progress in my current position I needed to level the playing field with my co-workers. By attaining a degree I am now equal to my co-workers on an educational level. This also gives me credibility among my colleagues to backup all of my experiences. My lack of formal education prevents me from advancing in my field. In order to get promoted I will need to have my degree due to all my colleagues having there degree. In conclusion, enrolling in college gives me career advancement by leveling the playing field among co-workers. College provides you with the competitive edge for promotion and creditability. Having marketable skills and experience allows you to have ample opportunity now and after retirement. The personal pride that comes with achieving a degree gives you a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. Increased workload and travel at work, family time, and self discipline can be barriers that make it difficult to achieve the goal. However, having a plan to overcome those obstacles and keeping a positive attitude will lead to success.
