Why Finance Is Intriging

I find finance to be highly intriguing because it is the oxygen that enables a company to initially breathe and then to grow.  Th finance department of any company is interesting because it is the meeting point between companies that need financing and the providers of that finance, whether it be early stage angel investors, IPOs or banks. Obviously, Dow Jones is very much an established business so will have different ways of receiving financing than smaller companies. As a subsidiary of News Corp, Dow Jones must present favourable financial information to access capital or receive finance from News Corp.

The most intriguing part of finance to me is to the analysis of acquisition opportunities. Therefore, Dow Jones, part of the largest media business in the world, appeals to me from a financial standpoint. Being such a force in the media industry presents many opportunities for acquisitions. The problems that may arise from these potential acquisitions such as legal issues, liabilities and valuation agreements are obstacles that need to be solved.  There may also be competition regulators who try to block acquisitions due to market monopoly power, which I am sure is a major obstruction for News Corp and Dow Jones. Overcoming these issues through intense negotiating is something that is imperative for the expansion of the New Corp.  

Finance is intriguing to me because every operation or project stems from the finance department. Companies tend to rely on finance departments to analyse risk and for strategic planning before embarking upon potential investments. This strong link between financial departments and other departments within companies such as marketing allows for a broader knowledge and understanding of a company, which is something that I find appealing.

Finance is very much a changing industry. With the world becoming increasingly globalised every day, the role of finance is transforming. This interconnection associated with globalisation has led to vast improvements in technology and hence led to changes in the way objectives are accomplished within the finance industry. These astonishing advancements have opened up some opportunities for change, which is something that intrigues me and is something that I want to become a part of.
