Who Do You Say That I Am?
Jesus questioned Peter in asking him if he loved him. Of course, Peter answered with a quick "Yes, of course". However, when people asked Peter if he knew Jesus or if they accused him of being "one of them", Jesus' disciples, he answered them by saying "I do not know this Man of whom you speak!" Jesus forgave Peter, just like he forgave everyone who had sinned against him.
In my viewing of Jesus of Nazareth, I recognized the various characteristics of Jesus. Jesus was a truly charismatic person because he spoke to thousands of people teaching morals and stories. People remembered what he said and understood the meaning of his lessons. Jesus wasn't afraid of anyone or what they would say to him about him being the Son of God. To the rabbis, he clearly states that he is the Son of God and he came to save us from sin. However, Jesus did not persuade anyone to believe him. Instead, he put it out there and let them have faith in him if they chose. The "I Can See" part of the movie is when Jesus heals a blind beggar that had been blind since birth. Jesus wanted to help him and he said "He lives in darkness. As long as I'm in the world, I am the light of the world". Jesus forgave the despised woman of the town. The woman washed Jesus' feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. He forgave her because she showed him the greatness of her love. A mob of men were chasing an adulteress and were ready to stone her. "She is going to be punished according to the law!" was screamed by the angry men. Jesus answered them by saying "He among you who is without sin, let him cast the first stone." The men looked at each other and hesitantly dropped their rocks and walked away. Yet, the woman was still crying so Jesus reassured her that there was no one there to condemn her and he wasn't either. In this movie also, Jesus casts an evil spirit out of a possessed boy. The boy is manic and runs wildly all over a room. Jesus yells "SATAN!" and the boy hits the floor while foaming at the mouth. Jesus says "Leave him" and finally the boy calms down and is healed. The boy's father goes over to hug him and is grateful for Jesus' healing. By the end of this movie, I was amazed and my mouth dropped at various scenes. The impression this movie had on me was breath taking, with no exaggeration. I thought this film captured Jesus perfectly and showed how he was and still is loyal to his father, compassionate to his people, and courageous for dying for us on the cross.
My viewing of The Passion of the Christ was horrific. I knew Jesus' crucifixion was bad, but the way Mel Gibson captured it was mortifying. When they beat him in front of a group of people before he was crucified; they used sharp dagers. The two movies I watched were similar but The Passion of
