What is Humanitas all about?
The fundamental principle behind our program is that the student is the center of the universe. The course offerings, the class structures and the extended services are all aimed at creating an environment for success. The teachers are committed to the principle that every student has a place and it is our mission to help them find their place and give them the tools to succeed there.
What are the goals of Humanitas?
The goals of Humanitas are built around seven basic ideas:
1. Students are challenged to think critically and apply what they learn from one classroom to the next.
2. Teachers work together to create a relevant, challenging curriculum.
3. Teachers and students work together to enhance the learning process.
4. Students are accountable to each other and to the teachers in the program.
5. Teachers know, understand and care about their students and are accountable to both the students and parents.
6. Humanitas is open to everyone - No one is turned away or rejected. Failure is a reason for intervention, not exclusion.
7. Every student is assisted in developing a plan for the future. By creating expectations of achievement, the doors to post-secondary opportunity are opened.
How are these goals put into actions?
The students in the Humanitas SLC are put on a path toward success from the first day of 9th Grade to the day they hold their diploma. The curriculum of the program adheres to the A - G requirements of the University of California. Students in the Humanitas SLC are expected to complete this curriculum and to exceed these minimum requirements. The purpose of this is to insure acceptance into University, and the ability to compete effectively when they get there. Throughout their high school careers, the students are active participants in the learning process. The teachers help to build the connections between disciplines that make education meaningful, useful, applicable to daily situations and enjoyable. Students are encouraged to participate in the planning and implementation of this curriculum.
