"WEALTH AND POWER"
(FR. JOSE RAMON T. VILLARIN SJ'S COMMENCEMENT SPEECH FOR AGSB AND ASOG)
The commencement speech of Fr. Jett Villarin SJ simply emphasized at the beginning of his speech that whatever we plan to start to do from today, we should make sure that it's aligned with our goals or dreams to say that we have a meaningful beginning of our journey as new MBA graduates. Having completed successfully the MBA degree in Ateneo doesn't mean we are done but in fact it's just another milestone of a new beginning - a new challenge to a greater responsibility.
Fr. Jett stressed-out that being graduates molded in Ateneo with the teachings and principles of St. Ignacious Loyola, graduates should reflect and realize that in the end and very purpose of our life is to live with God's teachings. This should be the main parameter in shaping and fulfilling our life. Being an Ateneans, regardless of the achievements, what counts most is how good we have live our life on earth, how clean our soul when we die. We should pass this world with a pure soul ready to be accepted in the kingdom of our Heavenly Father.
Morever, Fr. Jett has made a profound meaning and direction between wealth and power in his speech. It is true that graduates cannot deny the fact that from the very first day they have enrolled in the graduate school in Ateneo, they have manifested their intention to strive for more wealth and power. The knowledge and wisdoms acquired in Ateneo School will gradually empower the graduates to excel from their respective businesses or workplace resulting to more revenues for wealth and getting the position in the society for power.
But Fr. Jett, as Jesuit, has a different perspective about wealth and power which he believes that could serve as an instrument in doing good things to our fellowmen especially the needy unlike most people would only agree and see it as the source of all evil. Fr. Villarin reiterated that Ateneo graduate school of business and governance came into existence to what it is today because the school believes that in the force of wealth and power thru its graduates' stature in the society, it could significantly do a greater good in the society
