1) What does the word 'diuresis' refer to?

Diuresis is the increase in the rate of production of urine by the kidneys, and usually results in an increase

in release of urine from the body

2) What are the particular characteristics of a 'water diuresis'?

Water diuresis is a result of an ingestion of water that is greater than required by the body. It results from

the suppression of ADH secretion, so the collecting ducts become less permeable to water and the

excess water is lost with a little or no change in the solute concentration.

3) In the table below record the details for each of the subjects in your group. If there were only 3 subjects in your group draw a line through the last row (Subject D).

(a) Rate of urine production (ml/min) versus time. Plot the data for all subjects on the one graph. Make sure you identify each subject

(b) Urine osmolality versus time. There will be only one subject for this graph.

(c) Urine sodium concentration versus time. There will be 2 (or 3) subjects for this.

(d) Sodium excretion rate versus time. This will be for the same 2 (or 3) subjects as above.

in it and is represented by the number of solute particles per 1 kilogram of solvent.

(a) Describe what happens to the rate of urine production in the 3 different treatment groups.
