Waissly Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky is an accomplished painter who's art work can be seen in museums

all over the world, in such countries as; Germany, Russia, France, Spain, Switzerland, and

The United States. I first saw his paintings in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, NY

in 2008. Wassily Kandinsky is an artist, expressionist painter, and a personal favorite

of mine.

Wassily Kandinsky was born on December 4, 1866, in Moscow, Russia. When

Kandinsky was young he liked to draw, write poems, and play the piano and the cello. Music

was always a big part of his life. Wassily's wanted him to be a lawyer. Kandinsky studied law

and economics at the University of Moscow from 1886 until 1892. After graduating in 1893 he

became an associate professor of Law in the Department of Law at the University of Moscow.

After seven years he decided to give up a successful career to devote himself completely to

painting. One key event that helped him in that decision was visiting an exhibition of

the French impressionists in Moscow where he first encountered Monet's, "Haystacks".

Wassily Kandinsky was one of the great masters of expressionistic style, as well as the

outstanding representative of pure abstract painting using mostly colors and shapes.

Expressionist painters use values of color and light to show their subjects rather than painting

in fine detail. In the year 1910 Kandinsky produced his first abstract watercolor "The Blue

Mountain". Which is a painting of a blue mountain with by two broad trees nearby, one red and

one yellow. He was influenced by properties of color and the sound of music. He wanted to

visualize these properties with abstract compositions.

When I was sixteen years old I went on a school field trip to The Museum of Modern Art

in New York City, NY. It was there where I first encountered the influential art of Wassily

Kandinsky.
