History

The United way organization began in Denver, Colorado 1887 by a priest, two ministers, a woman from Denver, and a rabbi. The group of church members recognized the need to help the community welfare problems. The group of church members started by collecting funds for local charities, referring clients to cooperating agencies, assisting with emergency assistance grants and coordinate relief services for the locals. The following year the company raised 21,700 and created a movement that spread throughout the United States. In 1918 executive of 12 fund-raising coalition held a conference in Chicago and created the American Association for Community Organization, the forerunner to the United Way of America. By 1948 more than 1,000 neighborhoods has an established United Way organization. In 1973, the United Way and the NFL joined to raise public understanding of the programs open to the community and the social services troubles that the Country is facing. In 1974, the United Way raised 1.68 billion dollars to help the communities and local nonprofit organizations. In, 1996 the United Way identified their strategic plan focus area healthy communities, families, and healthy children, education, and income. In 1997-98 the United Way raised 3.4 billion, increasing profits by more than 4.7 percent. This same year the United Way and the NFL celebrated 25 years of partnership. Over the years the NFL allowed the Untied Way to share their message with more than 110 million viewers during football season. In 1999, Bank of American foundation donated 50 million dollars over five years to local United Ways in 22 States. Melinda and Bill Gates also donated 10.5 million dollars to the United Way foundation in 1999. In 2001, the United Way the United Way of New York and the New York Community Trust created the September 11th fund to help families that was affected. The September 11th fund raised 425 Million within the first four months ("Live United", 2012) . In 2007, the United Way Financial Stability Partnership was created. This partnership will allow low-to-moderate income individuals to accomplish long-term monetary constancy. In 2009, the United Way of America and the United Way International joined as one to produce the United Way Worldwide. In 2011, United Way signed a joint venture agreement with China Charity federation. Currently the United Way celebrates its 125th anniversary and enters joint venture with CNN international and CNN to share the Live United message in areas around the world ("Live United", 2012).

The United Way Worldwide serves 1,800 communities in 40 countries and territories. The United Way helps low income families by showing him or her how to increase financial stability.
