In this assignment I choose t write about the Louisiana Purchase. Thomas Jefferson a man that went against all what he thought was to moral and to his understanding had to put his feelings aside in order to attain such land for such a small price and it later proved that he will always be remembered as the man who purchased Louisiana and later created 13 new territories. I will give you the reason why it was purchased and what were the short and long term consequences of this purchase.
How did the U.S. acquire the territory in question?
When you first talk about the purchasing of Louisiana you think that okay purchase of a land. For someone who does not have the luxuries', meaning that they know very little about history simply because they are not afforded the education we have they may have thought that this was all that it was. Well the Louisiana Purchase was one of the largest land deals in history. In 1803, the United States brought Louisiana. We borrowed the money approximately $15 million dollars to purchase over 800,000 square miles of land. That means land was purchase for 4 cents or less. Imagine that. The housing market was great back then. This deal was the greatest accomplishment of President Thomas Jefferson's and lead up to the Declaration of Independence. Even though Jefferson had much to say, it was written by James Madison. Thomas Jefferson strongly spoke against the federal government and advocated states' rights. Jefferson's understanding of the central government can be seen with his disagreement with Alexander Hamilton over the creation of a National Bank. This is an important part of history and the purchasing of the Louisiana purchase because Jefferson had to bite his tongue and put his feelings aside if he wanted the funds to go through as smooth as possible. Waiting for an amendment would have delayed transaction to go through. Thankfully everyone agreed that it was a good move.
The purchasing of Louisiana was an important move because in 1801 Spain and France signed a treaty, secretly tiding Louisiana to France. Then of course with that treaty being signed, France was an immediate threat to America. Gotta admit love America's thinking. America feared that if it did not purchase New Orleans from the French, it could lead to a war. The reason was because it would lead to a main way of transportation. The exchange of ownership of this main port meant that it was closed to Americans. When Jefferson sent ships to France to try and secure its purchase, they returned with an agreement to buy the whole entire Louisiana Territory. Like now even back then we Americans didn't have the money to pay $15 million out front so we so borrowed the money from Great Britain at 6% interest. Being that we now had purchased this territory, the land in America nearly doubled. , The southern and western boundaries were not clearly stated in the purchase
