With the rapid growth of a new economy called the “Shared or P2P Economy”, this new type of economy is roughly $15 Billion in 2014 and estimated to reach up to $335 Billion by 2025. These new type of economies under cuts the traditional business that provide services for the following and much more:

Companies like

Uber (Taxi Services)

Airbnb (Hotel Services)

TaskRabbit (Chores Services)

In Chicago, the following situation has happened:

It seems there had been a thriving market in the limited number of medallions, but the entrance of UBER broke the monopoly power of these licenses, crushing their value. In April 2014, thirteen medallions were sold in Chicago, for an average price of $342,150. In July 2015, only one medallion sold -- for a price of $150,000. And when I contacted the largest medallion broker in the city, he said he currently has 11 medallions for sale at an offering price of $150,000 -- but no one is willing to bid for them, and he hasn't even received a lowball bid!

The Future of Uber:

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has made no secret about wanting robots to replace human drivers in his rideshare service—and now he’s found somewhere to develop them. Several U.S. states already permit autonomous vehicle tests but all require a human in the driver’s seat should the technology unexpectedly fail. Uber ultimately wants to eliminate human drivers altogether.

The following states have passed some type of legislations:

  • Nevada
  • Florida
  • California
  • Michigan
  • DC

The reason Uber could be expensive is because you’re not just paying for the car—you’re paying for the other dude in the car. When there’s no other dude in the car, the cost of taking an Uber anywhere becomes cheaper than owning a vehicle.”

The cost of a driverless car will range between:

$70,000-$100,000

Will come online 2020 and be mainstream on 2025-2030.

As we, all know that the taxi medallion is an old business model that is bound to fail, just a matter of time. As the previous example in the Chicago market. The problem is that Local City Council receives donation money from local taxi unions to keep the status quo in line. As it has been mention before, a medallion in NYC goes for $1,000,000.
