TO DA-DUH IN MEMORIUM

Characters

 Da-Duh: is a round and dynamic character who lived her whole life in Barbados and is very confident and proud for her life style, surroundings and ways of looking at the world; she seems to have a dislike for cities, even the one in her country and any form of technology and is seen to believe in stereotypes as she believe in the dominant white male. However she still took her granddaughter on walks, and showed her a different landscape from what she sees everyday one covered with fruit orchards and sugar cane.

Narrator:  The Narrator is a round and static character, lives in New York but visits her grandmother in Barbados, She is the grandmother of Da-Duh, she is a lot like her grandmother prideful and stubborn at certain points of the story. Despite not meeting her grandmother’s preferences, they got along well and went on many walks together and now she looks back on her days with her Grandmother as an Adult.

 

Settings

The setting of this is parallel with one side describing a vintage Barbados covered in lush vegetation and the other describing a more commercialize city such as New York city. Giving the reader a side by side view on the differences between Da-Duh’s and the narrator’s worlds, views and lifestyles.

Point Of View

This story was told from First Person Narrative who was the granddaughter of Da-duh reminiscing in the memories of her late grandmother.

Conflict

Urban vs Rural, The narrator and Da-duh live in two different worlds and communities. The narrator living in an urban area is growing with a view of the world that all cultures are equal and technology is abundant. Da-Duh, living in a rural area, has grown up with the belief of a racial and gender hierarchy.

Climax

One morning Da-duh wasn’t feeling well, and her granddaughter sang for her until breakfast at 11. Da-duh slept that entire afternoon. She remained sleeping until her granddaughters and daughter had left. She told the narrator not to forget to send her the picture of the Empire State building, but by the time she mailed her the postcard, Da-duh had died. During the visit, the narrator spends a lot of time with her grandmother. They spend most of their time talking to one another, getting to know about each other’s lifestyles. The narrator says she’d send a postcard of the Empire State building to Da-duh when she returns home.

Resolution

The story was never resolve as the narrator sends the post card, Da-duh dies looking out the window watching her island being attacked by planes. The narrator looks out to downtown New York picturing land full of sugarcanes, she remember how her grandmother use to take her on walks.
