Thozhilali

(Dignifying Labour)

Thozhilali is a Social entrepreneurship undertaken by two members who are moved by the pain undergone by the unorganized workforce especially the construction workers who are still at the mercy of others to a great extent they spend a lot of time and energy, waiting at crossroads and junction to be hired. Thozhilali indents to dignify labour by giving a platform where in both labors and employers come together for mutual support and exchange.

Thozhilali acts as a bridge between employers who are looking for laborers or unskilled workers of any discipline and Labours who are looking for a better working environment and fair wage.

Thozhilali will be first setup in Trichy and in coming years it will be established in the nearby cities. In the first year  Thozhilali targets to get around five hundred labours and around hundred employers to enroll as members, and to double them in the second year.

The idea of starting Thozhilali sparked when we happen to notice a large crowd of people flocking to towns and cities and waiting near crossroads looking for a job. Even in this 21st century when everything is modernized and technology has overpowered, the fate of the labours in unorganized sector has not changed even little bit. They still follow century old method which they followed even at the time of Jesus. Bible mentions in one of the parables about a master going into market and hiring labours to work in his vineyard. All they know is to come to nearby city or town in the early morning and hoping that someone will hire them patiently waiting near crossroads and junctions.

Now since the undertakers are moving towards the internet, we need to address these problems also using technology. Technology has reduced the manual work to a great extent and now we are living in such a period of time that the day is not very far when the manual labor will be paid more than what we imagine can be paid to a person with a collar job. In our Business Plan we are trying to address both the problems faced by people for getting the work done and the problem labours face for getting  right job and wage;  reduction of the amount they needed to pay to the third parties as commision who enjoy the benefits of the hard labor.

The term unorganised sector refers to the firms whose activities are not governed by any legal provision or any collective agreements between workers and employers. This includes home-based jobs, self-employment, agricultural work, construction work and a lot of other temporary occupations. The unorganised sector does not give any benefit to the workers in terms of various laws like Minimum Wages Act, Factories Act, etc. The workers have to forego the benefits such as provident fund, gratuity, maternity welfare, etc. The term ‘informal’ is often used in the place of ‘unorganised’. While it is understood that unorganised industries will employ informal or unorganised labour, organised sectors can also engage informal labour.
