Thomas Green Case Study
Power can be displayed in many ways and in the workplace it offends is. When you are new to a job you have to make sure you make a good first impression. This will change the type of power someone tries to lead you with. Green started off by questioning his boss in a meeting calling him out before he understood what was going on, this changed the dynamic between Davis and Green. The first impression can be the best or the worst it all depends on what you say. It is important when you start with a new that you ease in quietly and work hard until people understand your style.
Greens actions were more focused on what he thought he could do with his limited experiences. His goals were not as lofty as Davis' goals but Davis was there to help him. As a more experience manager in the company who understood the market better Davis understood the possibility of tapping into a growing market. Green wanted to work slowly into the new role as manager but Davis wanted him to get off to a fast start. Green was focusing all small projects on his own but Davis wanted to make sure that he looked at the bigger picture. Davis wanted to make sure he was able to tap into other contacts as well as develop new contacts and Green was focues on new customers. For three months Green went off on his own and tried to develop a new product that he did not have all the information on. This looked unfavorable to Davis.
McDonald wants Green to be a great employee and promoted him without Davis approval. Green and McDonald got along very well because they went to the same university and Green made friends with McDonald. Davis would like someone with more experience and he also wanted to be the one who added the person the company. Davis was already taken back that McDonald promoted such a young manager with such little experience and he was already skeptical when Green walked in. Also Davis wants an employee that keeps him informed and does not question him during a large meeting. Davis would not have a problem if Green took him to the side be he was upset that he questioned him during a meeting.
Each person wants to be treated with respect and respected for the knowledge that they have. Each person understands they have something to bring to the team but Davis needs to know that he is the one in power and that Green respects him. Davis brings up needing to know his schedule because he needs Green to know he is in charge. It is not as much about the scandal as Davis is inserting his power of Green so he knows that he is the one that needs to be respected as the person of power. Green wants to be a valued employee and a rising star like he once was considered he thinks he is burning the candle at both ends and he is not being recognized for the work he is doing that is correct.
