The Use of Propaganda
Propaganda is defined as ways to spread information when promoting a cause. Posters, commercials on television, banners, the Internet, and numerous signs of all different sizes are all a form of propaganda, which is widely used in. Propaganda in any can drastically change what people think about a certain things, whether politically, as seen by Nazi Germany in World War II, or commercially, such as different forms of advertisements. The use of propaganda is still a factor in today's world, but in a much widely used and false way than ever. If the word is heard in a way, there is always negative feeling, but sometimes can be positive. The use of propaganda has it is ups and downs, the way people spend their money, or the way they treat themselves in any matter of a way. Today propaganda is used every where in life, no matter where the person is.
Propaganda is everywhere, where ever anyone is. For example, take this Asics running shoe ad in a magazine named Competitor. The shoe is a girl's shoe, but, this company makes shoe for both genders. The shoe is on asphalt, which mainly show thats one place where any person can run on while they run in running shoes. Since mainly running on asphalt is much better then running on concrete, because concrete can put to much pounding on your joints. The shoe has bright light colors which shows the focus of getting attention. Also the shoe has cushion, besides the way it looks, it shows that this shoe can be safe to run on asphalt. This ad mainly wants people to focus on the shoe other
then any other surrounding area on the page. This is ad could be made for people who like to run. Although it is from a magazine called Competitor, it does not mean it is just for people who love to compete in running or any other sport. Since it shows many articles about doing fun athletic events, with or without a cause. Also the company Asics does not just make running shoes, they also make sports wear which is made to keep people comfortable while they exercise. By having many products this can have the consumers buy many items from them.
There is nothing around, but just the background of New York City, which there is a quote in the corner that explains why New York is in the background, "Proud sponsor of the ING New York City Marathon" (Asics). Another quote that is said under the shoe "Teach asphalt a lesson in forgiveness" (Asics). Donna Woolfolk Cross explains that for good or evil, propaganda provides our daily lives helping to shape our attitude on a thousand subjects (419). One device that is shown is card stacking which means the positive facts that support the propaganda. Since the ad is saying positive bits of information about the shoe, it is not going what negatives there can be for this shoe, hence the New York Marathon and Teaching asphalt to apologize. Since it is card stacking it show no negative info about the shoe. Another device that is possibly used in this ad is band wagon: the support of an action or an opinion because it is popular. The company is actually as popular as Nike in any case, by all the sponsors it has just like Nike.
There are two devices that are configured with the ad, also that is added is the fifteen appeals. Fowles describes the appeals as "By giving people's deep lying desires,
and picturing states of being that individuals privately yearn for, advertisers have the best chance of arresting attention and affecting communication" (429). An appeal that can be notice is the need for aesthetic sensation. Fowles explains that the aesthetic sensation is when "Advertisers know that there is little chance of good communication occurring if an ad is not visually pleasing. Consumers may not be aware of the extent of their own sensitivity to artwork, but it is undeniably large (441). In the ad that the audience may notice is that the only thing that can be notice is the shoe, it is enlarged. It seems like the reason the shoe is enlarged is because the company (Asics) wants the audience to notice the shoe. Mainly looking at the shoe shows that it can be pleasing to catch someone's attention, and just say buy me as the quote mentioned before "Teach asphalt a lesson of forgiveness" (Asics), which also brings the appeal of the need to feel
