The Underlying Theme
The theme is a very important element for film producers and viewers to understand when making and watching the movie. Without a strong underlying theme, the movie won't be able to give a long lasting impression to the audience. Furthermore, the theme of every movie allows each film to have its own color. For instance, two movies, The Blind Side and Remember the Titans, deal with the story of high school football team, yet they still give different taste to the audience due to their unique underlying themes.
The Blind Side features Sandra Bullock, who plays a role as the mother of a wealthy family, giving a low-social status student to play football and have a better life as a son, a brother, and an athlete. This movie has several themes that shape the plot. First, it focuses on giving messages to all the student athletes throughout the America; no matter who you are, and what kind of background you came from, hard work pays off to have your dream come true. Also, after seeing how Michael becomes a successful football player, I realized how the environment plays a crucial role in our lives. Though Michael's case is bit lucky being supported by a loving family, it really comes down to student athletes who make the right decision in the right environment. For instance, Michael's cousin is even more talented and athletic than Michael, but his decision to put himself in a poor surrounding has led him to die. This is very tragic, but also enlightening to students to make the right choice. Lastly, this movie underlies the importance of family. Michael's family is very encouraging to watch because his family is all about love and care even if a family member did something wrong. It shows how strong the idea of love is compare to hatred and ignorance. This last theme seems to try reaching the parent of student athletes to not give them too much pressure and allow their children to prioritize their life before sports.
On the other hand, Remember the Titans is a completely different story though it deals with the game of football. Its main theme is the power of playing as one; also meaning racially integrated unit. The team Titans had to put in many efforts and time to stay together as one in the time when most people were very sensitive about racial segregation. This movie focuses more on the aspect of the team instead of each individual like the movie The Blind Side portrays. Remember the Titans shows more in depth about how the team fights off their inner struggle during the season. At the end of their season, Titans develops a theme of the story; a theme that shows nothing is impossible when stayed as one. In the end though, it ultimately does touch upon the similar theme that the movie, The Blind Side depicts; it prioritizes the importance of hard work and never giving up. Both the team Titans and Michael never gave up even in the most difficult circumstances.
