The Truth about Abortions
Abortion is a very touchy subject in the United States. There are many ethical issues and problems that come with the subject of abortion. Some people believe that abortion is murder, these people are pro-life. Others believe that it is the mother's choice if she wishes to terminate the pregnancy or not, these people are pro-choice. Many issues that arise with abortion are the methods that are used in this procedure. There are countless ways to perform an abortion. Some are obviously much safer than others. Even then there are some serious side effects that may happen during or after an abortion.
Abortion is one of the biggest decisions a new mother has to make regarding the future of her pregnancy. A woman can have many reasons as to why an abortion might be the right thing for her. Suction aspiration is the most common method of abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Some common side effects that most women will experience following the procedure include cramping, nausea, sweating, and feeling faint. Less frequently complications include possible heavy or prolonged bleeding, blood clots, damage to the cervix and perforation of the uterus. This method of abortion is used early on in a woman's pregnancy so the fetus is really not developed. The side effects are mild and most woman feel back to normal within a week or so. This is an ethical abortion method because it is done within the early stages of a woman's pregnancy. Therefore the risks are way less than an abortion done later on. Even though the side effects are not major, many women are still affected emotionally after this procedure. So maybe woman should be counseled more before going through this procedure. Although this is the most common abortion method a lot of people believe any form of abortion is wrong.
So what if a woman does not find out about her pregnancy until about 12 to 15 weeks? Even though she is further a long in her pregnancy she still has other options that are available to her. Dilation and curettage is a surgical procedure performed during the first 12 to 15 weeks. . Dilation and curettage is similar to suction aspiration but, with the introduction of a curette in the cervix. The curette is a looped shaped knife that scrapes the lining, placenta and fetus away from the uterus. The side effects are basically the same as the previous method, but with an increased chance for perforation of the uterus. This procedure is performed a little later on in a women's pregnancy. There is a tool that is added along with this method since the pregnancy is further along. The recovery time is usually the same but there is an increased in one of the side effects. Since the pregnancy is further along it puts the women more at risk for major side effects. This can take a toll on a woman not only physically but emotionally. So if this method is considered all risk should be explained.
There are still many factors as to why a woman might have an abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. No one really knows what that mother may be
