The Singer Solution to World Poverty and Facing Famine Comparison
Facing Famine by Tom Haines and The Singer Solution to Poverty by Peter Singer are dealing with the same issue but the authors use completely different tactics in which to address the problem and attempt to convey assistance from others.
In Peter Singer's, "The Singer Solution to World Poverty" he discusses how the majority of the world is dealing with famine and sickness and all the deaths that come from it, while we are living a life filled with chasing luxurious possessions. Singer's main tactic of attempt to persuade people to help the less fortunate is using extremist points such as that every amount of money spent on something that is not a complete necessity is intentionally letting a person die, and that if your annual income is higher than 30,000 dollars that you should donate all of it except the 30,000.
In Facing Famine Tom Haines simply just uses detailed descriptive diction to describe each and every part of a person dealing with famine and sickness endures. This is a much more effective method of persuasion than Singer's, which is irritating and obnoxiously condescending.
Both of these essays show the passion that both Haines and Singer have. There intentions are both the same but Haines has a much more effective strategy of pulling at his well off audiences heart strings, rather than making them feel guilty for leaving an average life that even Singer himself has been known to partake in. I believe that Facing Famine by Tom Haines is a much more affective persuasive essay than The Singer Solution to World Poverty by Peter Singer.
