Summary:
This book is about a little girl who discovers the nature of the secret garden and a mysterious mansion. Mary grew up in India. Because of an outbreak of disaster killed everyone in her household except her, She was sent to her uncle’s manor, which has hundreds of rooms and gardens, At first Mary was unwilling to do anything, such as wearing clothes and put on her boots. After a few weeks, She starts to explore the house around. A gardener she meet told her about a secret garden that has been locked up for ten years after her aunt died. By meeting a peculiar robin that showed her the way, Mary found the buried key that can open the secret garden’s door. Finding the key made Mary even more curious about the garden. Hidden in a curtain of ivy, Mary found the door and finally found what she was looking for.
Reason of choosing this book:
I have heard of this book and there are some TV programs named as same as the book. Then, I watched the animated movie of this book and I think it would be much more interesting to read the complete version of the story. That’s why I chose this book.
Characters:
1. Mary, who is one of the leading character in the story.
She has a disagreeable-looking, foul-tempered and selfish at the beginning, because her parents unloved her and refused to see her. She thinks that everyone should obey her orders. After she was sent to the house of her uncle, she has changed a lot. She begins to improve her attitude. She was active, positive and interested in the amazing nature.
2. Colin, who is another leading character in the story.
He is a sickly boy; always feel painful and cried fretfully. He has to sit in the wheelchair all the time. Everyone in the house think that he should not live, including him father, the uncle of Mary’s. Until one day, Mary found him, and told him a lot of stories in India and also about the secret garden, Colin wanted to see it. When Mary took him to the secret garden, his world become colorful than ever.
Special of Mary (PART OF THE THEME):
Her changes of personality and attitude of life made her special in the story. Many people locked themselves in their own world and being self-centered. Mary is one of the cases in the story, after she become more and more positive, she can even encourage Colin to change his mind not to be so negative. Although many people said that he should not live anymore, he should believe in himself that his illness could be cured.
