The Paris Hilton Way
Over the years, one cannot help but notice how the criminal justice system has evolved into its present arrangement. We are all somehow affected by this system, and in many ways this system affects the attitude and beliefs of this country. The United States is considered one of the most powerful countries, and at a point in time, one of the best economic systems in the world. Still, even a king and queen have their problems behind closed doors. The penal system in this society is growing more fragile by the day (Time Inc., 2010). The well known celebrity Paris Hilton has made numerous appearances within our criminal justice system (CJS) courts (Celebrity Justice Blog, 2008). Celebrity Hotel heiress Paris Hilton has been in the negative spotlight for many years. She continues to receive a slap on the wrist for all of her misdemeanors, and felonious acts (Toplicar, 2010). The media interjects in Ms. Hilton's daily life, and has constant reports regarding her unproblematic court hearings which seem to always alleviate her of any harsh sentencing. This analysis will consist of the understanding of the different media sources involved with Paris' last criminal act, one's perception of society, and personal critical analysis.
Media Description: When summarizing the different types of media sources, one must look at the pros and cons of each source. Take for example, CNN news coverage, and People's magazine; they're at two different ends of the spectrum in regards to what type of news is displayed, and how the companies will choose to display it. Paris' last major run-in with the law was on August, 27th, 2010, when she was caught with a small plastic bag containing .08 gram of cocaine (Toplicar, 2010). The media coverage exploded with reports about Ms. Hilton's incident, and covered all the different areas within the case. There were tabloids that slandered her name all over the media, as well as reliable news sources which decided to approach the report from an analytical perspective. Interestingly enough, the Fox news network went into grave detail as to the dramatics of the incident by describing the preceding events which led to the discovery of the cocaine (Fox News Network, 2010). These deliberate tactics used by the network such as the mental portrayal of the marijuana smoke permeating the air outside the escalade in which Ms. Hilton was located at the time, achieved a wide variety of entertained audiences. CNN, on the other hand, focused more on the court procedure concerning Paris' conviction (CNN Wire Staff, 2010). However, the main issue that the Media coverage's had in common was that all of the reports looked at Ms. Hilton being favored by the CJS (CBS Interactive Inc., 2010).
