The Metamorphosis
In the story, "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka became about Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman that works for the same boss his parents owe money. Basically, he wakes up being an insect-like creature in which he is unable to go back to work. From this point on I tried to link this with real life. In the story Gregor does not like his job as a traveling salesman at all because he has to wake up early in the morning. I had a similar situation with my past employer. I did not much hours in the week, but there was still that urging to stay there until another job comes along. It felt like I was caught in a maze I can persevere and leave or stay at the maze. Either way it is a horrible feeling to be in. Especially when family and friends get involved in the mix, Gregor's sister, Grete Samsa initially helped Gregor through his metamorphosis for a while until it felt more of a burden to deal with her brother. As a result, his own family is slowly leaving him. I took this situation carefully because if someone is having it tough family will be there to assist. However, being aided in a time of need can be a long and tedious process until they become fully recovered. To the family of Gregor they thought this metamorphosis was a temporary stage in his life and that he will transform back to normal. Grete in the other hand wants to get rid of Gregor because he is driving lodgers out of the apartment. Grete said that if he really were Gregor, he would have left and let them live in peace. As a result, he left the next morning and died. But, what stunned me was that his parents and sister actually did not take his death seriously. The family took it more as a relief than mourning. Sure the felt sadness, but moved easily like nothing. Can Gregor relate to the working man or woman in today's society? That was what I was thinking throughout the story.
