The Human Side of Management -Article Summary

According to Teal any problem in a company is a cause of poor management. Managers are the ones who are responsible for every missed opportunity and companies' success. As management has become one of the most known jobs, it is not as easy as it looks .When employees are unsatisfied management or manager is blamed. The question is "Are we expecting too much from the managers?" every company wants a manger who is skillful in every aspect as strategy, negotiations, writing, cost control, resource allocation, technical and show their leadership qualities, at the same time we want them as friends and mentor .It is very rare to find managers with the combination of all these set of skills; Teal believes this to be inhuman requirements for a person to have these kind of skills.

Since the expectation for the managers has been raised, managers tend to underperform. We are more focused towards the manager's technical skills than their character; Teal believes that a manager's character is essential as other skills. As he believes that management is supremely human activity. We are now seeing the less of human involvement in managing. As teal says " Managing is not series of mechanical tasks but a set of human interactions" In this article he talks about his experiences when he helped several entrepreneurs and CEO. He mentions that not all the stories ended happily but showed how extraordinarily difficult management can be. Teal mentions some characteristics of great managers as being imaginative where manager can do something different then their competitors, integrity where management is responsible, clear communication, consistency and avoiding agendas.

After reading all these great stories about these managers, I feel that managers besides from technical skills, conceptual skill should also have Human relation skill. Rosenbluth's family story shows what imaginations can do? They started up with a small travel business, as Rosenbluth 's grandfather wanted to do something different then his competitor so from a travel business they were in immigration business and later they reinvented and now they were in information business, this story shows how a manager can incorporate their creativity and imagination in a business.

Bill Sells, Manville manager who witnessed the biggest blunders in the 20th century " manufacture and sales of asbestos". Manville managers refused to acknowledge the evidence even despite if the damage; they mentioned that employees and customers were aware of the hazard that would be caused due to the consumption of asbestos. This shows no loyalty of the management or manager for the employees and customer.
