The Late 20's and 30's were one of the best times in U.S. history. Technology was advancing and sky scrappers were heading to the sky. Everything was going right for the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave, but no one ever expected for our country to go down hill so quick. This era was known as The Great Depression and it was one of the darkest ages for our country's economy.
There are so many reasons that caused this depression and the main event that caused it was the famous 1929 Black Tuesday Stock Market Crash. There were a lot of people that were selling their stocks. The ticker that tracked the stocks was so overwhelmed that it fell behind. The Depression was so bad that people were committing suicide. Another reason that the Great Depression happened was there were businesses failing and the government created the Smoot-Hawley tariff in 1930 to help protect the American companies.
The Great Depression really affected everyone around the U.S. and it was pretty depressing. Like in 1930 the Great Dust Bowl had really affected all farmers in the Mississippi Valley. They could not pay their taxes or debts and had to sell their farms. Also when they did sell their farms they did not get any type of profit. While in major cities people were desperate for money and have food on the table, women would sell themselves for money. The crime rate would go up from all the unemployed workers. The worse thing that really affected everyone was in their household. Husbands would drink to get away from their problems and half the time the women would leave them because they couldn't provide for their families.
One of the ways that the United States recovered from the Great Depression was that there was a war on it's way and they needed workers to start making weapons for WWII. While FDR serving as president he came with a new idea to help people get jobs and get back on track. He called this plan The New Deal. One way that we could have avoided the Great Depression was to have paid attention to the stocks and not have spend so much money on stocks. Also that banks should have not been playing with people's money that was in the bank. So people that had their money in the bank would literally go broke. Also they could have stopped the bubble in stock prices from happening.
I think this was one of the darkest times for the United States because it had effected everyone and it was the lowest time for our country. But after a while and thanks to FDR we over came the depression and moved along just like everyone did in the world. I also think that have learned from our mistakes that we shouldn't play with people's money that are in the bank and that to have a back up plan for when we know that we made a mistake and we can fix it in a right way.
