Dear Juan-Carlos,

I can only imagine the position that you are in right now. You're not only making the decision to break the law or obey it, but you are choosing between two different lives, two different futures for yourself and your family. You live in poverty and fear in Mexico. You're wife Rosa has been sick for many months and you cannot afford any medication for her. Your children are looking to you for answers and for solutions. You know of many people who have illegally crossed the border into America, but you never thought that you would have to. Now that circumstances have changed and you need to make a quick decision, coming to the USA illegally seems like the only answer.

I will not give you any advice that I myself would not take. I'm not going to tell you that you should obey the law and stay in poverty and disease. But I'm not going to tell you not to either. I want you to understand the advantages and disadvantages of crossing the border illegally or staying in Mexico before you make your decision. You should attain as much knowledge that you can about both options before committing to one. Most people come to the United States expecting too much, expecting easier work and more money. You should know that though you will receive more money for your labor than you do in Mexico, you will still have to put in the same amount of work and effort, if not more.

The Advantages of crossing the border illegally and living in America are quite exciting but rather limited. Some benefits of coming to the U.S. are the amount of available jobs, better living conditions, higher salary, and better education systems. Another important advantage is emergency health care, when you go to the hospital they must treat you immediately and not turn you away because you are lacking a green card or visa. The disadvantages of coming to the U.S. illegally are that without a green card or visa your job options are very limited. Most companies and businesses will not hire someone lacking their documents.
