1. John C. Breckinridge- southern Democrat from KT in the presidential election of 1860 Buchanan's VP. Pro-slavery. Supported extension of slavery into the territories

2. John Bell- wealthy slaveholder from Tennessee who ran in the election of 1860 with the Constitutional Union Party on a moderate pro-slavery platform.

3. Fort Sumter- federal fort commanded by Major Robert Anderson and taken by Confederate forces under the command of General Pierre G.T. Beauregard on April 12, 1861. This action began the Civil War.

4. Crittenden's Compromise- a series of acts which would guarantee slavery where it already exists, and would reinstate the Missouri Compromise, extending it to the California border.

5. Confederacy- Confederate States of America

6. Jefferson Davis- president of the Confederate States of America

7. Martial Law- military government that suspends ordinary law

2. Greenback- name for Union paper money not backed by gold or silver. Value would fluctuate depending on status of the war (plural)

3. Copperheads- democrats who opposed the civil war

5. Habeas Corpus- a writ ordering a prisoner to be brought before a judge

6. James Mason- sent to Britain to persuade them to support the Confederacy by sending troops.

7. John Slidell- sent to France for the same reason as Mason.

8. Trent Affair-foreign event involving Union seizure of British ship with Confederate diplomats.

9. Attrition- the wearing down of one side by the other through exhaustion of soliders and resources

10. Anaconda Plan- designed to smother the South's economy, this three part strategy lead the Union to victory during the Civil War
