My family reunion on my mother's side was a blast when I was a kid. There were many fun games my cousin and I played. Then there was the steaming hot food the adults brought to this elaborate pot luck. Also, seeing the family and friends was great fun too.

When I was a kid, my cousins and I would play flag football, toss horse shoes, hike trails in the woods, and go fishing. One of the most memorable times was when I was ten years old and hiking with my cousin on a trail in the woods. As I was on the trail, I saw tall pine trees and dark green grass. Then as I kept walking along I saw a forked tree. I started to climb up the tree to the fork part only a few feet off the ground. Then when one of my cousins, aunt, or uncle passed by, I jumped out and startled them. I got a kick out of it, but they did not seem to laugh like I did. When I got back to the reunion most people gave me bad looks and then I got in trouble with my parents.

Then there was the food, drinks, and desserts that the adults brought to the reunion. This was known as pot luck, when people bring their best dish for everybody to enjoy. My favorite was my great aunt's beef stew; it is like heaven in my mouth. Then there was my mother's homemade chicken and dumplings, but I usually had already eaten a bowl before we got to the reunion. The drinks were hand mixed fruit punch, Dr.Pepper, tea, and even black coffee for the old folks to stay awake. The other drinks were for the adults only, like beer and wine. Desserts were good: homemade blackberry cobbler, peach cobbler, ice cream, banana pudding, and lots more. This was the reason I liked the old reunion because the old people can cook and now all the younger people buy pizza or chicken. The new way is just not the same and I miss the old way.

Finally seeing the family at the reunion was fun too. My family comes in different sizes and personalities. The Moring side is short and lazy. This is how my brother acts a lot of the times. The Thompson side is average height and has a good work ethic. This side I am on, and I am proud of it. I really like talking to the older folks; they have all the stories from way back in the day from their younger days. Then I see and talk to my cousins that I might get to see once or twice a year. I also get to meet new family members, like the one who just got married or had a new baby. I have great memories of the people who used to come and now are dead. It is just a good thing that we have a reunion or I might not know too many of my kin.

I really enjoyed my family reunion as a kid. The food, the drinks, and the desserts were all so good. Then also I loved the games and the people I talked to. I really miss the loved ones who have gone, but they're loved ones that have gone but, there in a better place. I thank my family for the reunion because of the people I met that I may have never have known.
