Summary of the books of the Old Testament Books
Nehemiah
The book of Nehemiah is a narrative. Some of the themes related in this book are obedience and opposition. The book of Nehemiah tells the story of Israelites return from the Babylonian captivity. Also how they rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem. In this book the word had reached Nehemiah that the walls needed to be rebuilt so he asked God to allow him to return so he could help save the city. God answered his prays and the kings allowed him to return to Jerusalem from Babylon, where he was made governor. Nehemiah gained a lot of support throughout the process of building the wall from not just the poor but also the nobles. . Although there was a lot of opposition they got it done. Nehemiah had to restore the idea of true worship and prayer among the people. He also set some new policies from God that the people should follow.
Numbers
The book of Numbers are made up of law. Some of the themes is this book are sins of disobedience and fulfillment of God's promises. The book draws its name from the census made of the Israelites by Moses to help them organize them into their 12 tribes. After the census the Israelites were to leave Sinai to go to the Promised Land. It is a short distance from Egypt to Israel but it took them 40 years to get there. The reason was that during the trip there were many complaints and hardships. The Israelites revolted against Moses and God. God condemned them, but Moses intervened on their behalf. God decided to show them mercy. For their disobedience and lack of faith God made them wander the desert until all the people of that generation had died. Before finally going to the Promised Land, Moses took a second census.
Job
The Book of Job is of wisdom. The main theme of the book is of suffering. This book deals with two issues crucial to every person, suffering and the power of God. Job was a farmer. He was a righteous man, and was living a very comfortable life. God and Satan have a conversation whether a person who is righteous and rich can maintain their faith in the face of severe circumstances. God allows Satan to test Job by taking away his family, and his livestock. Job kept his faith. Job was tested once again. This time it was his health that was affected. Satan tests him with sores all over his body. Job still can't bring himself to curse God. Three of Job's friends show up. The four of them have a lengthy conversation as to why the think that Job is being punished. A fourth friend, Elihu, enters the conversation and suggests that God is only testing his faith and he did nothing to upset God. God finally speaks to Job in a storm. He explains why all of those things were happening. Job understands that God has the right to do what he feels
