Summary for Avonte
On October 4, 2013 Avonte Oquendo, was last seen alive. This story is about a 14 year old autistic teenager who walked out a school in broad daylight. Also, a security guard was watching Avonte leave his classroom, and did not try to help him back to the classroom. The video was not shown at first, they waited a week to release the footage. The video had shown that Avonte walked around the corner where a river was at. Autistic children love water for some reason, how I know is because my brother has autism. Avonte mother told the teachers from day one to watch her son very closely. Avonte like to run away from people, like most kids you see today. Avonte was different than most children he could speak just a little, but was still concerned non-verbal. From the looks of this case the teachers in that classroom was not doing their job to not know he was missing.
Seeing Avonte on the news made me sick to my stomach, this society doesn't care about the disabled people or children. It took them one hour to actually call the police, which is insane that one hour could have saved Avonte. We live in a country where it protects the normal children at all cost but neglect the disable children. Avonte teachers failed him by not keeping him safe, and they knew he was a runner. This story is tragic how a young 14 year old autistic teenager lost his life, because he wanted to play in my opinion. Today's society needs fixing before another disabled child in up missing from school. This school was supposed to be the highest rated autistic program in New York Reports say that the school tried to hide the video footage as long as they could to cover up for their mistake. I imagine some nights that is was my autistic brother walking out of school. This was no ordinary case about a teenager leaving school, it’s an article on how schools need to more involve with disable classrooms.
