Part 1: The hearth and the salamander

1. The significance of Montag seeing his reflection in Clarisse's eyes is that he saw who he really is, whom he is deep down.

2. The significance of the memory and the wish is that Montag remembers being with his mom by the candles

3. Clarisse notices the Montag laughs when she's not trying to be funny. She also notices that he answers her quickly, like he doesn't have to think about his answer.

4. The thing that the McClellans do to get them classified as peculiar is that all gather at night with the lights on in the house.

5. The finial question that Clarisse asks Montag on the first night they talked was is he happy. This question is important to the plot because if she didn't ask him that he probably would've noticed that he wasn't happy in life.

6. "She had a very thin face like the dial of a small clock seen faintly in a dark room in the middle of the night when your waken to see the time and see the clock telling you the hour and the second, with a white silence and a glowing, all certainly and knowing what it had to tell of the night passing swiftly on toward further darkness, but moving also toward a new sun." The smile is significance because she is being described as a clock.

7. He describes her as another sort of hopes or funnel he has for his emotions because he talks to her everyday he sees her as his escape. He also says that his eyes are like mirrors. She is also like a watcher of a Marienent show.

8. The setting characterizes his wife and she looks stone dead and her eyes like black pearls. The room is like a tomb and she is the dead corpse. There marriage is dead and he realizes that he isn't happy.

9. He finds out that he isn't happy and that he wants to find the truth and he thinks that he hates his job and hates what he does at his job and he now wants to read books.

10. His wife overdoses on sleeping pills because she keeps forgetting that she took pills and he keeps taking pills so she has to get her stomach pumped and her blood stream cleansed.

11. Somebody to love and make him feel happy and wanted. He wants somebody that is not an idiot like his wife.

12. Clarisse rubs a flower under his chin and if the yellow color rubs off, he is in love. The color does not rub off. Montag feels frustrated. He says he is in love.

13. She is very kind and friendly. She isn't afraid to learn, or to not follow the rules. She is brave and defiant.

14. Montag is different from the other firemen because he is not afraid to learn, and to think. While the others just do what they are told. Also he really listens to Clarisse is more
