- What effective leadership behaviors were exhibited by Colonel Novak?
Colonel Pete Novak was assigned to command a squadron that had more than 200 men and assets. When he assumed command, it clearly lacked leadership and strategic direction. Poor processes and team spirit/work was missing. As an effective and strategic leader; the following behavior from Colonel Novak was observed;
Learning Process:
Within the change he brought about; Colonel was very closely following the learning process to understand where they were → What team was and what they wanted to achieve → Having regular engagements with the officers and NCO’s to understand how they want to get to their objectives and the final goal/mission → he made the journey (Walked the talk) → and continuous follow through on the progress made
Created sustainability, involved people and bridge the gap between internal complexities. Balanced the tension within the squadron. Fostering leadership at all levels (Both Officer & NCO levels),
Great blending of Thinking, Acting & Influencing to drive strategy
Strategic Thinking:
Colonel Novak followed the key steps of a strategic leader by first observing (Scanning) the situation on the ground with regards to the operational process, People and challenges around the squadron.
Strategic Acting:
Colonel Novak was very effective in communicating and visioning the Goals of the Squadron. – Set clear priorities. He listened to people’s complaints whenever possible of their poor living conditions, flew with the crew on missions, pitched in to work with others.
Colonel was acting in certain situations; Short term, with long term in mind.
Strategic Influence:
Colonel Novak stands out in the case as a great influencer within the squadron;
- He was committed to strategic direction and learning
- He fostered openness and built relationships
- Engaged people at different levels in the process
- He ‘Walked the Talk’ to cultivate true commitment from people and not just for mere compliance.
- Made people understand the strategy and made it a common goal
- Checked progress with regular meetings and follow ups
- He was a role model for others to look up to him (Walk the Talk)
- Demonstrated that others and their opinion is value
- What does this case illustrate about effective leadership?
Effective leadership work towards achieving goals when individuals and teams decree strategic leadership when they think, act, influence to create sustainability.
