Introduction

In today's sporting world the issue of doping by competitors has raised a serious debut. Doping which is the use of artificial means to improve performance in sport. This habit has been around for a while are debates of people saying doping bans should be lifted and some disagreeing to this notion. Many years ago cheating in sport was taken very seriously but the use of performance enhancement drugs was never taken serious. In fact, after doping in sport blossomed during the latter part of the nineteenth century, it was viewed as a standard practice, out in the open, until after World War I (Hoberman, 1992b). Not until the 1920s was there any widespread attempt to admonish doping in sport, much less designate it as a formal violation of rules or as cheating (Hoberman, 1992b). Around 1933 doping started to become an issue in sports. While Rieser and others continued to speak out against doping, it was not until 1967 that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted to adopt a drug-testing policy banning the use of specific drugs (Todd & Todd, 2001). In this essay the writer will be arguing on why doping bans in sport should not be lifted.

Why doping bans in sport should not be lifted?

If all the sporting boards in the world are to lift a ban on doping this would destroy the system and sport spirit that today's sport is based on. In today's world man sportsmen and sports women are using these banned substances, and in if the bans are to be lifted this would increase the huge already existing amount of pressure on upcoming and determined athels to practise the use of these banned substances. If there is no prohibition against doping athletes, current world records, and all the records that will be set by those under the influence of drugs, would forever change in very short periods of time. This will kill the spirit of sport and this will not be fear for those dedicated athletes that have trained and worked hard with no use of drugs to achieve what they may have achieved. Lifting the ban on doping is greatly diluted by the fact that doping should only be done under medical monitoring and supervision. How can one assume that all the athletes will follow that policy? There are a number of athletes that who are doping right now but because we do not know about it nothing can be done about them. So saying that doping should be done under medical super vision does not hold any water because there is no guarantee and it's a naive assumption that the competitors will ever adhere to the doping limits that they will get from the practioneers. Most of these athletes have money and they can use that against the system so that they have the edge against other competitors.

Athletes with socially advanced and financially secure backgrounds, be it support from family or sponsors have enough the motivation to use any means to get to where they want to be. With success will come more money, so most of them will do anything for success come their way. They will put up uncompromised physical dedication. So if this decision to lift the doping bans is made this would put most athletes under serious health risks, because they will push themselves to an extent which the human body may not be able to handle. Lifting the doping bans would also not be fair on athletes from poor or less economically developed states that may not be able to afford these doping methods in order to get their artists on the same level as of the other athletes. This will be bad for sport as the richer countries will separate themselves from those poor nations. With sport being of the factors that is uniting the world as one this will be a definite blow to today's globalised world. So doping will not be a very good idea.

Lifting the ban on doping will not only have an impact the athletes and sport but it goes beyond all that. It will be a problem that will affect societies. Why does one say this? The benefits of sports go beyond the sporting arenas. Sport is a powerful tool in forging peace around the world and helping with creating mutual respect, lasting relations built on understanding between people from different backgrounds. Development in many countries has been brought up by sport, it has drawn individuals togethers. It has bought infrastructural development to societies and this has enhanced community services. The community services help in fostering cooperation and strengthen social ties. Sports are also an important learning tool for young people. Youths around the world have learnt from sports and have stayed away from crime because of sport. If doping in legalized Youths in poorer societies will end up wanting to enhance themselves to match the other athletes, this may lead to them using other means that may be were harmful to their healthy has substitutes of doping methods. Others may embark on criminal activities for them to be able to afford doping substances.
