Background information:
Since the collapse of the Siad Barre regime in 1991 and the subsequent civil war, Somalia has been a complete disaster and chaos. In 2012, a provisional constitution was passed election Hassan Sheikhn Mohamud president. Even after this, the Islamist terrorist organization is still a threat. Somalia’s GDP and living standards are among the lowest in the world. The population is dependent on foreign aid.
Current Status:
Somalia is currently ranked number two in the organization of fund for peace, it is under very high alert. The main reasons why this country is suffering is because of an ineffective government, famine, disease, piracy, militant extremism, and frequent external intervention. Poverty and hunger levels are extremely high in Somalia today and many people die from extreme poverty and huger, especially children and women. Violence in Somailia is very shocking, kids at the age that they are supposed to be going to school, they are picking up guns which explains the instability of the country. Due to the country’s conflicts, the poor, especially kids and women are always on the run.
Poverty, hunger and health is so poor in Somalia that more than 70 per cent of the population is under the age of 30. Almost 20 per cent of children do not survive past their fifth birthday. About 40 per cent of the population lives in extreme poverty; in rural areas this figure exceeds 50 per cent. In 2012, 62 per cent of the population was rural. Livestock is essential to the economy and is the chief source of food and foreign exchange income. Over 60 per cent of the population depends on livestock for food and income.
The United States and Somalia have actually been in contact various times. In 2011, the United States announced another $17 million in emergency aid for Somalia. Another time was in 2012 when the US offered $7 million for information on the whereabouts of the seven key members of the al Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based terror group behind bombings and attacks in the region. As well as the time where the US has been in contact with Somalia is in 2013 when for the first time in more than two decades, the United States grants official recognition to the Somali government.
To conclude, Somalia is a country of Africa which is in great place of suffering. Famine, war, and crime are just some coming things you can find in Somalia. This country is facing major problems and in my opinion, the key to solving most of their problems today is quality education including peace and tolerance. If this country wants to improve they have very long ways to go.
