The sociological imagination refers to a persons ability to understand how their life intersects with history. It states that society is shaped by human behavior as much as human behavior is shaped by society and neither could realy be understood without the other. All of the choices that we make are shaped and defined by social, historical, cultural, political, and economic factors. The sociological imagination enables its possessor to understand the larger historical
scene in terms of its meaning for the inner life and the external career of a variety of
individual. Everyone contributes to the shaping of society and history even as he is
made by society and history. (ps page 1-6) Using the sociological imagination helps us understand our place in societies history. It gives us an idea of what came before us, our place in the present and what may come in the future.
