Arguments Against Social Responsibility
It is enhancing society in general. However, a business can't afford to go around doing good deeds if there is no potential payoff. If the business were to lose too much money, then it would cease to exist, hurt customers, and leave employees jobless.
There are some that argue that social responsibility is shown only when companies go beyond what is optional, and really intend to create a benefit for others besides the company. Additionally, some companies may not benefit from some forms of social responsibility. These businesses should focus on what they do best as a business and give back what they can. Examples of socially responsible behavior range from projects that raise money for research on diseases, raising money for the needy, requiring workers to volunteer within the community, recalling products that may be dangerous, promoting recycling, and offering free services to the disadvantaged.
The danger is that the rhetoric of corporate social responsibility can be an effective disguise for seriously antisocial behavior. But there is, of course, another side to that coin: namely the opportunity to point out hypocrisy at its most egregious
Most pervasive, perhaps, has been the question of how much social responsiveness is enough. The perspective fails in define the extent to which an organization should proactively attempt to benefit society. At what point do the efforts of the organization come at the expense of profitability?
In short, let look at the both side of the arguments for and against as pointed out by McGraw -Hill in his book :-
For:
* Business helped to create many of the social problems that exist today, so it should
play a significant role in solving them, especially in the areas of pollution reduction
and cleanup.
* Businesses should be more responsible because they have the financial and technical
resources to help solve social problems.
* As members of society, businesses should do their fair share to help others.
* Socially responsible decision making by businesses can prevent increased government
regulation.
* Social responsibility is necessary to ensure economic survival: If businesses want educated and healthy employees, customers with money to spend, and suppliers with
* quality goods and services in years to come, they must take steps to help solve the
social and environmental problems that exist today.
