1. Introduction
1.1 Description and Illustration of Shannon-weaver model
The Shannon-weaver model is a general model of communication which was introduced by Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver. Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver were scientists who worked at the Bell Telephone Company in America. The model was actually developed to separate noise from information carrying signals in the field of communication technology. But later, it was applied to human communication. The model is shown below:-
1.2 Elements of the model
The Shannon-weaver model includes eight elements which are: an information source, , a message, an encoder, a signal, a channel, a decoder, a destination and a noise.
The source of information is a person or group of persons that communicate a message for a particular purpose.
The message is the information or idea that the information source intends to communicate to the destination.
The encoder is a device that translates the message of the sender into an understandable signal or code.
The signal is a set of data and information that passes through the channel.
The channel is the route that the signal passes through to reach the destination.
The decoder is a device that is used by the receiver to translate the signal into an understandable message.
The destination is a person or group of persons that the message was intended to reach to, i.e., the ultimate goal of the message.
The noise is any kind of barrier that affects the communication process.
2. Applying the model to the case
By applying Shannon and Weaver model to the case of Bahrain Fashion Week Facebook Page, the following elements were identified below:-
Information Source: The information source was the marketing department of Bahrain fashion week. This was because a message was communicated by the marketing department of Bahrain Fashion which informed the customer about the latest products and upcoming events.
Message: The message was the written and visual code on facebook. News were posted on facebook by the marketing department of Bahrain Fashion Week regarding its latest designs, promotions and events that was intended to reach the customer.
Encoder: The encoder was Facebook as it was the platform that translates Bahrain Fashion Week's message into a code that can be understood by its customers. Facebook translated the message into signals that was later transmitted through the internet.
Signal: The signal was the PHP code. The words and messages entered on facebook were translated into PHP code and got transmitted through the internet.
Channel: The channel used by Bahrain Fashion Week was the Internet. The signals from facebook passed through the internet to reach the customers. The internet was used as a medium through which Bahrain Fashion Week expressed their ideas.
Decoder: The decoder was a computer, laptop, iphone or any other electronic device that could support facebook. These devices translated the PHP code that was transmitted through the internet into the common human language that was understood by the customers.
Destination: The ultimate destination or reciever was the customer of Bahrain Fashion Week. The entire communication process was created with the goal of making the customer aware of Bahrain Fashion Week's events and promotions.
Noise: The noise was a breakdown in the internet. A breakdown
