Trinity Community Hospital has developed a Five Year Plan which includes the development of a regional cancer center, orthopedic center, and cardiovascular center. Also included in the Five Year Plan are Trinity's hospital-wide target outcomes: quality and safety, service excellence, staff achievement, and growth and profitability (General Case Senario Artifacts). When determining which service line the facility should develop initially, these hospital-wide target outcomes must be considered and included in the development plan. Additionally, Trinity must incorporate a positive learning atmosphere for staff development stressing innovation and achievement. Another critical issue necessary to include in the development of the new service line is to ensure compliance with the states and Federal standards and maintain full accreditation by The Joint Commission and other pertinent regulatory agencies (General Case Senario Artifacts).

A1. DEMAND

Trinity is located in a growing community with an aging population. The demand for services is greater now than it has been in many years. Based on the demand for a new orthopedic service line, Trinity is in a position to significantly increase volume and enhance their financial performance, while providing progressive methods for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease processes that are most affecting the community.

The future of Trinity's position in the community as a hospital of excellence depends on the successful implantation of new service lines. The demand in Trinity's market area is for several service line developments including cardiology, orthopedics, and cancer center. In order to determine which service line to improve initially, we must first determine the demand for each of them and which would benefit the hospital and the community it serves. A Community Needs Assessment has been performed, and based on the findings; the demand for the orthopedic services in the community is expected to increase by 46% over the next five years (General Case Senario Artifacts). Additionally, inpatient joint and spine procedures are expected to increase by 30% while outpatient joint and spine procedures are expected to increase by 350% (General Case Senario Artifacts). With the existing resources currently available, Trinity will be unable to meet the needs for the growing demand for orthopedic services. Through interviews with orthopedic and neurosurgeons, Trinity confirmed they must make recruitment of additional physicians a top priority. As a result, several local orthopedic groups have expressed interest in joining the hospitals orthopedic team. Additional studies indicate the need for hospitals to increase the number of surgical suites, improve imaging equipment, and revamp or add physical therapy/rehabilitation capacity.
